After an innings which lasted 49.3 overs, England had set a respectable total of 310 for the opposition, New Zealand, to chase. Joe root top scored with 64 runs from 65 balls while Jos Buttler scored 61 not out.
New Zealand were well on course to chase down the Englishmen, after scoring a total of 158-2 after 30 overs with captain Kane Williamson on 87. The chase was being timed to perfection.
However, after some brilliant bowling from Mark Woods which saw the captain dismissed, followed almost immediately by the loss of Ross Taylor the chase began to collapse. England won the match by a total of 87 runs, with New Zealand only managing a total chase of 223 runs after 44.3 overs.
After a brilliant innings with the ball, Plunkett (4-55), now moves to the top of the tournaments leading wicket takers board.
England have one match remaining on Sunday against Australia but now the pressure is off. New Zealand however, must now beat Bangladesh on Friday and hope that England win against Australia in order to qualify.
