We continue our profiling of the nominees for the 37th Annual National Sports Awards. Next up is nominee for JUNIOR SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR, Julien Alfred.
Julien Alfred is talented beyond her years, and 2016 gave a glimpse of what we can expect from her in the future. She ended 2016 as the top OECS U18 sprinter, and was the first sprint finalist from Saint Lucia at the Carifta games in over a decade.
Julien currently attends the St Catherine High School in Jamaica. In January she competed at the Queen Grace Jackson Track Meet in Kingston, where she won the Class 3 200m in a time of 25.12s.
She took part in the 2016 Boys and Girls Championships in March after where she placed 2nd in both the class 3 100m and 200m, in a time of 11.77s and 24.48s respectively. She had won semi-final 1/3 Class 3 girls’ 100m dash in 12.37s.
At the National Championships later during the season, Julien completed the sprint double, winning the 100m in 11.70 s and the 200m in 24.33s. She also grabbed a 2nd place finish in the Under 18 girls shot put.
She ended the season by winning the 100m at the Winward Island School Games which took place in Grenada.
